A loan that suited your business when you took it out may no longer fit its cash flow or plans. Refinancing and debt consolidation are ways of reviewing existing borrowing, but a new agreement needs to be assessed on its full costs and commitments.
What is the difference?
Refinancing replaces an existing finance agreement with a new one. Debt consolidation brings several debts together into a single facility. Depending on the terms, either approach may change the repayment schedule or provide additional borrowing.
What should you compare?
- The settlement figures and any early repayment charges on existing loans.
- The new interest rate, fees, term and total amount repayable.
- The monthly commitment and how it fits your cash flow.
- Any security, personal guarantee or other obligations.
A lower monthly payment does not necessarily mean a cheaper loan. Spreading repayments over a longer period can increase the total cost. Additional cash left after repaying old borrowing is still borrowed money that must be repaid.
What information will help?
Start with your existing agreements, current balances, repayment schedules and recent business figures. Be clear about whether your priority is simplifying payments, changing the term or funding a specific business need.
