A personal Self Assessment bill can put pressure on household cash, particularly where payments on account are also due. Start with the correct liability and a realistic personal budget before considering borrowing.
How it works
Self Assessment is the individual’s tax position, separate from a limited company’s Corporation Tax. Any finance needs to match the actual borrower and purpose. Do not assume the company can simply pay a director’s personal tax without accounting and tax consequences.
What to consider
- Check the balancing payment and any payments on account, with their actual due dates.
- Review whether a payment on account accurately reflects expected income before requesting a reduction; an excessive reduction can lead to interest.
- Compare borrowing costs and personal liability with available HMRC payment-plan options.
- Use an appropriately authorised provider where regulated personal credit is involved.
What to prepare
Your tax calculation, HMRC statement, payment dates, household commitments and expected income. If company funds are involved, establish how salary, dividends or a director’s loan would be treated.
We can help explain the tax figures and plan reserves. We do not provide regulated personal lending advice. Contact HMRC promptly if you cannot pay on time.
Read the current official guidance. Scheme rules and availability can change.
