Supply chain finance can allow a supplier to receive payment earlier on an approved invoice while the buyer pays later under agreed terms. It relies on a structured arrangement involving the buyer and a finance provider.
How it works
Often called reverse factoring, this typically begins when a buyer approves an invoice. A participating supplier can choose early payment, less a financing charge, and the buyer settles with the provider on the agreed date. Availability depends on the programme and the parties involved.
What to consider
- Confirm who pays the fees and whether early payment is optional.
- Check how disputes, rejected invoices and changes to payment terms are handled.
- Understand whether the provider can seek repayment from the supplier and what happens if the programme ends.
- Do not rely on one buyer’s facility as the sole source of working capital.
What to prepare
Your customer and supplier relationships, invoice volumes, payment terms, margins and expected cash timings. Suppliers should ask key customers whether a programme already exists.
This differs from arranging your own invoice-finance facility. For a small business supplying a larger customer, an established buyer programme may be the relevant starting point.
