When your business pays wages and suppliers before customers settle their invoices, the gap can put pressure on cash flow. Invoice finance can provide an advance against eligible unpaid invoices, with the remaining balance released after payment and agreed charges.
How the main arrangements differ
Invoice factoring: the provider generally takes on collection of the financed invoices as part of the service.
Invoice discounting: the business generally retains responsibility for collecting customer payments. Whether an arrangement is confidential depends on its terms.
Some facilities cover a wider sales ledger; others allow selected invoices or customer accounts to be financed. Availability depends on the provider and the nature of your invoicing.
What needs checking?
- Which invoices and customers qualify, and how much can be advanced?
- What service fees, finance charges and minimum charges apply?
- Who contacts customers and manages payment collection?
- What happens with disputed invoices, late payment or bad debts?
- Are security, personal guarantees or minimum contract periods required?
Invoice finance does not remove all the risks of a customer failing to pay. Check who bears that loss under the proposed agreement and whether any separate protection applies.
Prepare your records
An up-to-date aged debtor report, customer payment terms and a clear record of disputed or overdue invoices will help the initial discussion. Accurate bookkeeping also helps you understand whether the issue is payment timing or a wider profitability problem.
We can help review the information and introduce you to Swoop. If you need a detailed cash-flow forecast or additional analysis, we will discuss the scope and fees first.
