Sales and cash receipts do not always arrive at the same time as wages, rent and supplier bills. Working capital funding can help bridge a timing gap, such as buying stock before a busy season or meeting costs while waiting for customers to pay.
Different ways to fund the gap
Options can include a business loan, an overdraft or revolving credit facility, and invoice finance where the business has suitable unpaid customer invoices. These arrangements work differently: some provide a lump sum with repayments, while others allow borrowing within an agreed limit.
Start with the reason for borrowing
Work out how much is needed, when it is needed and what income will repay it. A temporary timing gap is different from an ongoing shortfall caused by costs exceeding income. Repeated borrowing without addressing the underlying issue can increase the pressure on the business.
Questions to work through
- What does a realistic cash-flow forecast show?
- Could better credit control, stock management or agreed supplier terms reduce the gap?
- What are the full fees, interest and repayment commitments?
- What happens if customer payments or expected sales are delayed?
- Does the lender require security or a personal guarantee?
An unsecured loan can still require a personal guarantee. Understand the obligations of both the company and anyone giving a guarantee before committing.
