The government-backed Start Up Loans programme supports eligible people starting or developing a business. Crucially, the borrowing is a personal loan for business purposes, even if the business trades through a limited company.
How it works
The programme assesses both the business plan and the applicant’s ability to repay. It also provides business support and mentoring. Current rates, trading-age criteria and limits should be checked directly with Start Up Loans rather than relying on older brochures.
What to consider
- The individual remains responsible for repayment if the business stops trading.
- Include household spending and other personal commitments in the affordability assessment.
- Check how borrowing introduced into a limited company will be recorded.
- A strong plan and mentoring do not guarantee that a business will succeed.
What to prepare
A business plan, cash-flow forecast, personal survival budget and evidence of intended spending. Explain how the business will generate enough cash to support repayments.
For spouses starting a business together, consider each person’s obligations separately and the combined effect on household security. We can help with the business figures; the programme confirms eligibility and lending terms.
Read the current official guidance. Scheme rules and availability can change.
