Innovate UK innovation loans support eligible research and development projects with a credible route towards commercial success. They are competitive funding opportunities, not general-purpose business loans.
How it works
Businesses apply against a specific competition brief. Assessment covers the project, innovation, commercial opportunity and ability to repay. UKRI’s eligibility guidance distinguishes these loans from earlier-stage research and ordinary business funding. The current competition sets the terms.
What to consider
- Check that the work fits the eligible R&D stage and the competition scope.
- A loan remains repayable even if commercial results disappoint.
- Allow for application preparation, monitoring and financial reporting.
- Do not assume that an older brochure’s interest rate, loan range or timetable still applies.
What to prepare
A technical project plan, costed milestones, commercialisation strategy, evidence of demand and forecasts showing how repayment will be supported. Include the team’s experience and the need for public funding.
For a small company, the time and cost of an application should be proportionate to the project. We can help with the financial case, while technical specialists may be needed for the innovation assessment.
Read the current official guidance. Scheme rules and availability can change.
