Borrowing against an expected R&D tax credit can bring cash forward, but the anticipated payment is not guaranteed. The loan and the underlying tax claim must be assessed separately.
How it works
A lender reviews the claim, supporting evidence and business finances before advancing part of the expected receipt. The facility is intended to be repaid when the credit arrives. Security, repayment mechanics and recourse depend on the agreement.
What to consider
- Check what happens if HMRC delays, reduces or rejects the claim, or offsets amounts against other tax liabilities.
- Allow for interest and fees if repayment takes longer than expected.
- Establish whether the lender can seek repayment from other business assets or a guarantor.
- Do not borrow against an inflated or weakly evidenced claim.
What to prepare
The claim calculations, technical support, submission details, correspondence with HMRC and a cash forecast that includes a delayed or smaller receipt. Confirm the expected net cash rather than a headline relief figure.
This can bridge a timing gap but cannot make an ineligible claim valid. We can help coordinate financial information, with specialist tax input where needed, before a funding enquiry proceeds.
