Overseas receipts and supplier payments expose a business to exchange rates as well as transfer charges. Compare the amount that will actually arrive and the timing, rather than a headline “fee-free” claim.
How it works
Banks and specialist payment providers use different exchange-rate margins, fees and processing routes. Some offer forward contracts to fix an exchange rate for a future payment. A forward contract creates a commitment and can have cancellation or margin requirements.
What to consider
- Compare total received after exchange-rate margins and all sending or intermediary fees.
- Check the provider’s authorisation and protections: safeguarding is different from FSCS deposit protection.
- Confirm payment details independently to reduce invoice-fraud risk.
- Understand delivery times and the consequences if a planned foreign-currency payment changes.
What to prepare
The currencies, amounts, expected dates and frequency of payments, along with supplier terms. A forecast should show how exchange-rate movements affect margins and cash.
We can help assess the business impact of currency costs. Product-specific currency or hedging advice should come from an appropriate specialist; fixing a rate provides certainty but can mean missing a later favourable movement.
