A VAT bill can coincide with stock purchases, wages or delayed customer payments. VAT funding may spread the payment cost, but it should be considered alongside cash collection and the next VAT period.
How it works
A finance provider assesses the business and the liability before offering a facility. Depending on the agreement, the lender may pay HMRC directly. The business then repays the facility, with interest and fees, over an agreed period.
What to consider
- Confirm the actual VAT deadline and payment reference for your scheme and period.
- Compare repayment costs with the cash available after normal operating expenses.
- Check guarantees, security and fees; these are not the same for every VAT facility.
- Where payment is difficult, consider contacting HMRC about a payment plan and compare the available routes.
What to prepare
The VAT return or calculation, due date, recent bank statements, debtor list and a cash forecast covering the next VAT bill. Include any previous tax or loan arrears.
Borrowing can address a temporary timing gap. If each VAT period creates another shortfall, we should review records, margins, collections and the amount set aside for tax.
